Alfred Lee Smith, 76, of Petoskey, passed away Feb. 5, 2007, at Bay Bluffs medical care facility.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at Stone Funeral Home, 2098 E. Mitchell Road, in Petoskey. Pastor Leroy Sutfin will officiate. Interment will take place in Lakeview Cemetery.

Alfred was born July 23, 1930, in Levering, the son of James and Myrtle (Ball) Smith. He attended Pellston schools.

He had worked for General Motors in Flint for several years and had also worked at Barnum Bros. in Petoskey for several years before working on the Great Lakes in the Merchant Marine.

For many years, he had worked as a fireman on freighters for various companies including Penn-Dixie Cement and Medusa Cement Co., retiring in 1972.

On Dec. 23, 1967, he married Viola Roby in Harbor Springs and the couple made their home in Petoskey. The couple had spent their winters in Florida for the past 30 years.

Alfred enjoyed working on cars and small engines and wood crafts. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Alfred was a member of the Seafarers Union.

He is survived by his wife; six children, Donna (Steve) Shepherd of Mount Vernon, Ind., Albert (Rita) Smith of Grand Blanc, Dorothy (Ronald) Smith-Fesl of Pinckney, Terry (Carol) Smith of Vassar, Linda (Michael) Babin of Memphis, Mich., Jane (Dick) Keller of Harbor Springs; 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, Frank (Rose) Smith of Traverse City, Henry (Gail) Smith of Brown City, Jim (Margaret) Smith of Charlotte; and a sister, Libby (Donald) Schnider, of Muskegon.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Northern Michigan Hospital Dialysis Unit or Bay Bluffs medical care facility. Envelopes will be available at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, where friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7.
