Carl Roderick Erfourth

CADILLAC - Carl Roderick Erfourth of McBain died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at Autumnwood of McBain. He was 93.

He was born on Feb. 17, 1912 in Boyne City, the son of Ernest and Eva (Barkley) Erfourth. He married Evelyn L. Overholt on May 7, 1936 in Pontiac.

In his youth, Mr. Erfourth worked as a cook at the Dillworth Hotel in Boyne City, cooked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. and cooked aboard Great Lakes steamers. Later, he worked as a chef for the famous Cranbrook Boys School, serving Henry Ford and Edsel. During World War II he cooked under combat conditions for 27 months aboard Motor Torpedo Boat No. 75, Squadron 13 (The Black Cat Squadron) serving in Borneo, New Guinea and the Philippines.

After the war, he owned his own dairy farm in Rudyard and for a time he owned a restaurant there. He became a steelworker during the 1950s and finally retired as a deputy for the Pima County Sheriff's Department in Tucson, Ariz.

During the 1970s, he worked with his son, Roger, when the family owned the Pine City and Grantsburg, A&Ws. He was known as “Gramps” to the employees and the customers.

Carl loved hunting, fishing and football. He was renounced as a storyteller. Most of all, he loved retelling his hair-raising tales of warfare aboard his beloved PT75 boat.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Evelyn; son, Roger (Eileen) Erfourth of Cadillac; grandchildren, Geoffrey (Sherry) Erfourth of Tarpon Spring, Fla., Renee (Glen) Getal of Kalamazoo and Major Montgomery (Sharmayne) Erfourth USMC of Jacksonville, Fla.; and great-grandsons, Michael and Carl Erfourth.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ted, Freeman, Cecil, Harvey, Raymond and Guy Erfourth.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac, with Rev. Dale Ostema officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
