Cadillac News, July, 2005:
CADILLAC - Evelyn L. Erfourth of McBain died Sunday, July 3, 2005 at Autumnwood of McBain. She was 92.
She was born on Sept. 10, 1912 in Goodhart to Clarence Leroy and Mary Grace (Mallory) Overholt. She married Carl Roderick Erfourth on May 7, 1936 in Pontiac. He preceded her in death on March 23, 2005.
As a youth, Mrs. Erfourth worked as a waitress at the Lambkin Resort in Goodhart, located on the wilderness trail north of Harbor Springs. In 1935, at the age of 23, she was selected from the Lambkin staff to work for the Cranbrook Boys' School in Bloomfield Hills.
Although too shy to wait table there for Henry Ford, at Cranbrook she did meet her husband of 69 years, Carl Erfourth of Boyne City. Over time she and her husband moved to the Upper Peninsula, Flint, Arizona, Florida and finally to Cadillac where they spent their last years with their only son, Roger.
Mrs. Erfourth came from a German Menonite family and always remained true to her faith. She loved to attend church and worked on church programs serving youth and the poor. She was an enthusiastic reader and writer. She authored an unpublished manuscript about life in the Upper Peninsula. Even as her health deteriorated, she continued to write letters to friends and family from California to Florida.
Mrs. Erfourth spent almost her entire life as a wife, homemaker and mother. She was a splendid cook and loved to prepare meals for her family and friends. Her mince meat pie was reportedly unequalled. Her family will miss her greatly.
Survivors include her son, Roger (Eileen) of Cadillac; grandchildren, Geoffrey (Sherry) Erfourth of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Renee (Glen) Getal of Kalamazoo and Major Montgomery (Sharmayne) Erfourth of the USMC; great-grandsons, Michael and Carl Erfourth of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; and sister, Yvonne Overholt Abernathy of Flint.
In addition to her husband, Carl, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Russel, Ross and Claude Emerson; and sister, Alice.
Services are 7 p.m. Thursday at Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac with Rev. Dale Ostema officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
Visitation is from 6 p.m. until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.
