Charles W. Engler, 81

Charles W. Engler, 81, of Harbor Springs, died Sept. 24, 2002, at Northern Michigan Hospital.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Harbor Springs with pastor Tom Cook officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Charles was born July 11, 1921, in Buckley, Mich., the son of Lewis and Mary (Bains) Engler, He grew up and attended school in Petoskey, graduating in 1941.

Mr. Engler worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant during World War II. He returned to Petoskey and worked for many years as a fuel oil truck driver. He also worked for Petoskey Ford and Riverview Terrace.

On Sept. 19, 1947, he married Clara Allerding in Petoskey. She preceded him in death in 1994.

Charles then married Carol Heinz Taylor on April 19, 1997.

He loved hunting and "deer camp." His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and his many friends.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs and served as an elder and trustee. He volunteered many hours at the Manna Project and visited the Emmet County Medical Care Facility patients.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; son, Charles W. "Bill" Engler Jr. and his wife, Lois, and their children, Elaine and Eric; step-daughter, Susan Reid and her husband, Jim, of Petoskey; several step-grandchildren; and one step great- grandson.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Alma and June; and brothers, Louie and Floyd.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the hospice of choice or to the Little Traverse Conservancy. Envelopes are available at Schiller Funeral Home, where friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 25.
