Horace Kelsey

Horace Kelsey, former Orleans County Sheriff and Albion Chief of Police, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 1944, of a heart attack in Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester where he had been a patient for twelve days. He had been in failing health for the past two years.

Mr. Kelsey was active in police work for almost half a century until his retirement about three years ago as police chief. He was appointed to that post in 1927. First serving as jailer in the Orleans County Jail in Albion, near the start of the century, Mr. Kelsey later became sheriff for three years, after he had been courthouse custodian for ten years. He also served as constable in the towns of Albion, Carlton and Clarkson for more than 30 years.

Mr. Kelsey attended school in Carlton as a boy, moving to Murray at the age of fourteen. He worked on his father's farm for a time, later as a thresher and carpenter.

He resided in this vicinity for sometime before moving to Albion and was widely and favorably known. He had been a member of the Active Hose Company of the Albion Fire Department and the local IOOF lodge for more than a quarter of a century and attended the First Baptist Church.

On October 13 Mr. Kelsey would have reached his 78th birthday, with his 55th wedding anniversary occurring a day later.

Surviving besides his widow, the former Lois Rogers, are one daughter, Mrs. Wilfred Wilson of Albion; a brother, Melvin Kelsey of Holley and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Merrill Funeral Home in Albion. Interment was made in Mt. Albion Cemetery with committal services at the grave by the IOOF.
