Kanosh, Jan. 1 -- J. H. Barney died here Dec. 26 of Bright's disease. Mr. Barney was the son of Lewis and Elizabeth Barney, and was born in Iowa, Jan. 30, 1839. He came to Utah in 1852, driving two yoke of oxen across the plains at the age of 12 years. He lived with his parents at Palmyra (now Spanish Fork) and afterwards helped to settle Spring City, Sanpete county. He was called to Circleville in 1862 and early in 1865, he married Emily Tolton. They had 11 children, all of whom are living, 10 of them attended their father's funeral, one daughter was absent through sickness in her family. April 4, 1865, he started across the plains, as a captain of 10 to bring immigrants to Utah, returning November of the same year, he found his wife at Beaver, driven from their home by Piute Indians. Two years later he removed to Kanosh and has lived here to the time of his death.

He was a devoted husband and father, and a consistent Latter-day Saint. He was a member of the high priest's quorum at the time of his death.

The funeral was held Dec. 30, conducted by Bishop C. A. Kimball. The speakers were Elder B. H. Watts, and his brother-in-law, F. J. Tolton of Beaver stake.

James Henry Barny died (after about two weeks illness of Brights disease) Dec. 26th, 1911. He would have been 73 years old on the 30th of the present month. Born in Iowa, he came to Utah with his parents, Lewis and Elizabeth Barney in 1852. They settled first at what is now Spanish Fork, again they made a home at Spring City, called to move south to Circlevalley, Sevier Co. There he married a Miss Emily Tolton early in 1865. On April 4th the same year he left his young wife and crossed the plains as a captain of ten with teams to bring on immigrants to Utah. Returning in November he found his wife with her people at Beaver, driven from their homes by hostile indians.

The offspring of this pioneer couple consists of four sons and nine daughters. all married by the two youngest, and have produced forty grand children. Henry Barney was a pioneer and resident of Kanosh for near fifty years. An examplenary citizen, and firm in the teachings and practice of his religion.

The funeral took place on Saturday December 30th, twelve of his children were present at the time and heard their fathers name mentioned in honor. The speakers being B. H. Watts and President Tolton of Beaver Stake, brother of Mrs. Emily Barney, Bishop A. A. Kimball presided over the largely attended funeral.
