Lydia Laura "Toots" (Brown) Bonter

Lydia Laura "Toots" (Brown) Bonter, 87, of Mackinaw City, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at the Hospice House in Cheboygan.

Lydia was born June 6, 1918, in Harbor Springs, Mich., to Francis and Laura (Miller) Brown. She married Louis John Bonter on Oct. 16, 1937. She lived in Harbor Springs until 1960 and then moved to Mackinaw City.

Before retiring she worked at Wequetonsing Resort in the housekeeping department. After moving to Mackinaw City she cooked at Cunningham's Restaurant.

She was a member of the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City and an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 159. Lydia loved going to the Senior Citizens Center in Mackinaw City. She also loved watching and keeping track of the Detroit Tigers, win or lose, and enjoyed selling tickets for the buses for the Labor Day Bridge Walk. She enjoyed sewing, and making homemade raisin bread and mustard, playing bingo and going to the casino.

Lydia was a very kind, compassionate, happy person, and was a friend to all. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons, Richard (Sharon) Bonter of Mackinaw City, James (Ellen) Bonter of Vanderbilt, her daughters, Judith (Dennis) Martin of Mackinaw City, and Udella Thompson of Cheboygan, and daughter-in-law Karen Bonter of Mackinaw City; one brother, Wayne (Marcia) Brown of Petoskey and sister-in-law Isabel Brown of Southgate; she was blessed with seven children, 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and many extended family members, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Robert, Gerald (Gary) and Douglas. A very special son-in-law Vincent Thompson and very special daughter-in-law Juanita Bonter; her brothers, Elmer, William and Francis, her sisters, Agnes, Grace and Mabel.

Visitation will take place noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at the Church of the Straits, in Mackinaw City. Funeral will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Maria Rutland-Price officiating. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Lydia to Tender Care Health Center, 824 S. Huron, Cheboygan, Mich. 49721.
