Maurice Leo Hartung, 78

Maurice Leo Hartung, 78, of East Jordan, died Aug. 5, 1992, at Charlevoix Area Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.,. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Paullin Funeral Home in East Jordan with the Rev. David Downton of the First Presbyterian Church in East Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery, East Jordan.

Mr. Hartung was born Feb. 28, 1914, in Levering, the son of Edmund and Hazel (Srigley) Hartung. He grew up in Levering and graduated from Grand Marais High School in 1931. Mr. Hartung logged in the Upper Peninsula and farmed in Levering during his youth. He continued logging, farming and gardening throughout his life.

On Feb. 10, 1945, in Flint, he married Eva Cannon Rogers and she survives. The couple made their home in East Jordan in 1948. Mr. Hartung worked for the East Jordan Iron Works for 23 years, retiring in 1977. He was a columnist for the Grand Marais Pilot and the Pictured Rocks Review. He was well known for his many letters to the editor in the Petoskey News-Review, as well his unique storytelling.

Mr. Hartung was a former board member at the East Jordan Family Health Center and the East Jordan Co-op. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and enjoyed logging, farming, gardening and storytelling.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Hartung of East Jordan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Jim Meredith of East Jordan, Hazel and Neal Colburn of East Jordan, and Jane and George Jacob of St. Clair Shores; one son, William Rogers of Royal Oak; eight grandchildren; seen great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Gayle and Gordon Swenor of Petoskey; and one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Shirley Hartung of Mobile, Ala.

He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Stewart Hartung in 1947; a sister, Marion Doyle in 1991; and a brother, Niles Hartung in 1992.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the East Jordan Ambulance. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available at the Paullin Funeral Home of East Jordan where friends may call until 9 p.m. today, Aug, 7, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday, Aug. 8.
