Petoskey News-Review, Tuesday, 21 Apr 2009:
Nileen Kay Copeman’s journey of life came to a peaceful end on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the age of 66 at her home under the loving care of her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Gene, and together they were successful business owners of the Levering Café and the Paradise Lounge in Carp Lake.
Nileen simply loved life and taking each day as it came. She loved gardening and spending time outside in her yard with her dogs, Spike and Josey, feeding the birds and fiddling around. She was a professional garage saler collecting anything and everything that caught her interest. For many years she enjoyed attending art classes and especially enjoyed the company of the girls in class. Her talent of painting was extraordinary and unknown to many including herself.
As everyone knows, Nileen was always young at heart. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, Ryan, Amy and Saskia and spoiling her great-grandchildren, Channce and Owen. She has given them many grateful memories for them to hold onto. She had a special bond with her granddaughter Amy as they had the unique opportunity to spend a lot of time together. She also loved the holidays, especially Christmas and Halloween.
Survivors include her three children, Vickie (Jack) Dann of Levering, Steve (Risé) Copeman of Lynden, Wash., and Susan (Greg) Mallory of Carp Lake; one brother, Leo (Debbie) Hartung of Reese, Mich.; one sister, MaryJane (Glenn) Mason of Connecticut; three grandchildren, Ryan (Tabbatha), Amy and Saskia; two great-grandchildren, Channce and Owen; four nieces, Jessica, Carmin, Leah and Brianna; one nephew, Justin; great-niece, Ella; great-nephew, Derrick; her best friends, Barbara and Francis Pieckert and their children, Rip, Michelle and Francis, Jr.; and the rest of the dune buggy gang, and her precious pets, Spike, Josey and Smokey Joe. Beside her husband, Gene, Nileen was preceded in death by her parents, Niles and Lillian (Dennis) Hartung; her daughter, Paula Jean; and an infant son, Scott Eugene.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at the Nordman Funeral Home in Cheboygan. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 24, at New Hope United Methodist Church in Levering with pastor Matt Stoll officiating. Additional visitation will take place at the church on Friday beginning one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at the Carp Lake Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Nileen’s name may be directed to the Mesothelioma Cancer Research Fund.
