Petoskey News-Review, Thursday, 23 Mar 2006:

Patricia Jean Steffel

On Tuesday, March 21, 2006, Patricia Jean Steffel, of Petoskey, passed away at Northern Michigan Hospital; she was 71.

Patricia was born June 25, 1934, the only child of Elmer and Louise (Wintler) Hartung. She grew up in Harbor Springs and attended Harbor Springs Schools.

On June 13, 1964, she married the love of her life, Richard George Steffel, in Harbor Springs. Together they shared 41 happy years of marriage.

Pat's life centered on her family. She was the best wife, mother and grandmother she could be. She was always open, supportive and willing to lend a sympathetic ear or offer encouraging advice. When her kids came home from school, the house was always filled with the wonderful smells of fresh baked bread, cookies or pies.

Pat enjoyed life, and appreciated the natural beauty that surrounds us in Northern Michigan. She had a real green thumb and was proud of her success with houseplants and flowers. She enjoyed the quiet times spent in her flower garden and took great pleasure in watching the wild birds at the bird feeders outside her kitchen window. She also had a knack for arts and crafts as well as sewing; she put that gift to work doing alterations for a number of years for Maus & Hoffman's Clothing in Petoskey.

She was the happiest with her children and grandchildren around her, and could always be counted on to go overboard with gifts at birthdays and Christmas. Pat was loved by everyone who knew her and she will be deeply missed.

Pat was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, where at various times she worked in the cafeteria, served frequently as a room mother, and served as a member of the St. Francis Xavier School Board.

She is survived by her loving family: husband, Richard; her son, Mark (Jayna), and their children, Nicholas and Nathan; and her daughter, Marcia (Dale), and their children, Ellie and Eric Hoch, all of Petoskey.

The Mass of the Resurrection will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 24, at St. Francis Xavier Church. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. today, Thursday, March 23, at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey. A vigil service will be held at the visitation beginning at 7 p.m.

Friends wishing to honor Pat's memory with a memorial donation are asked to consider Northern Michigan Hospital Foundation or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
