The funeral service for Ruth E. Shorter-Bayha, 90, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey. The Rev. David Behling will officiate.
Ruth died Jan. 4, 2007, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey.
She was born in Levering on Nov. 1, 1916, the daughter of Royden W. and Esta A. Cooper. Ruth attended Levering and Pellston schools and graduated from Pellston High School in 1932 at the age of 16.
In 1935, she married her high school sweetheart, Carl G. Shorter. In 1946, Ruth and Carl Shorter started their business, Shorter’s Gifts on Lake Street in Petoskey, and later added The Knit N’ Purl, The Holly Harbor Christmas Store and The Cameo Antique Store in the Petoskey Gaslight District. They also owned and operated a branch of Shorter’s Gifts in Indian River.
Ruth offered lessons in the Knit N’ Purl and taught hundreds of people to knit, crochet and do various needlework.
Carl Shorter passed away in 1983.
In 1985, Ruth married Kenneth Bayha of Petoskey. They traveled extensively, and spent most of the year in Petoskey and winters in Florida, Arizona and Alabama.
Ruth was an avid outdoorsperson and was devoted to her family. She enjoyed bowling, boating, skiing, snowmobiling, mushrooming, walking and outings and picnics with family and friends.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, The Petoskey Bowling Association City League, Petoskey Gaslight Association, Petoskey Chamber of Commerce and the Petoskey-Crooked Lake Association. She was instrumental in saving the Depot Building which now houses the Little Traverse Historical Society Museum at the Petoskey waterfront.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Bayha, of Petoskey; three sons, Dean (Lynda) Shorter and William (Marietta) Shorter, all of Petoskey, and James (Barbara) Shorter of Flowery Branch, Ga.; nine grandchildren, Deanna (Shorter) Llewellyn, Dirk Shorter, Brian Shorter, Bethany Shorter, Robert Shorter, Lisa (Shorter) Foard, Eric Shorter, Jennifer Shorter and Ryan Shorter; nine great-grandchildren, Jason Llewellyn, Rachel Llewellyn, Travis Llewellyn, Lindsay Shorter, Brandon Shorter, Megan Shorter, Kellon Shorter, Destiny Jett, Kaitlyn Shorter; one brother, James (Eva-Mae) Cooper, of Bridgeman, Mich.; one brother-in-law, Robert J. (Norma) Shorter, of Alanson; and many nieces and nephews.
A friend recently noted that success is measured by the number of people an individual makes smile in a day and in this regard, Ruth Shorter-Bayha was very, very successful.
She was preceded in death by her sister, June Howe; her brothers, Neil Cooper, Donald Cooper and Robert Cooper; grandchildren, Rex Shorter and Kristin Shorter.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army of Petoskey or the Women’s Resource Center of Petoskey.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 8, at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, with the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the funeral home.
