Abram Auker Reist Biography (1893-1984)

Olds Gazette, September 5, 1984

Reverend Abram Reist passed away at the Edmonton General Hospital on Tuesday, August 28, 1984 at the age of 90 years.

Abram Reist was born in May City, Iowa, December 2, 1893. He moved with his parents to Michigan in 1901, then in 1910 Abe and his parents moved to Youngstown,

Alberta. In 1918 Abe went back to Michigan and maried Alma Snider, on July 26 and brought her west to his homestead where he had a farm and house waiting for her. Ten months later Abe was ordained Paster for the little congregation at Youngstown.

Due to the dry times, they had to leave Youngstown in 1924, and spent a year at High River, and from there came ot Carstairs to fill in for Pastor Henry Harder while they were away.

They liked it so well they just stayed. After several moves throughout the years, they went to Westward Ho, where he served the Church there for several years.

In 1960 he retired from farming and moved to Didsbury where he remained until 3 years ago when they moved to Edmonton, where he attended the Holyrood Church. He went to be with his Lord, August 28, 1984 at the age of 90 years, and 8 months, after a short illness.

Mr. Reist leaves to mourn his loving wife, Alma, of Extended Care Nursing Home, Edmonton; 3 daughters, Mrs. Harry Stauffer (Gladys) of Tofield; Mrs. Clarence Spicer (Frances) of Carstairs and Mrs. James Earl (Bessie) of Ponoka; one son, Lewis and his wife Janice of Kamloops, B.C. and a foster daughter, Mrs. Constance Bredin of Sundre.

He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by all his brothers and sisters, though he was third oldest in a large family.

The following notation was found in his bible and had been written quite recently – “The Lord is my shepherd, I shal not want, As along lifes pathway I jaunt, If I keep on travelling, He will show me the way, And I shall reach that home some glorious day.”

Praise the Lord, he has reached that home.

Honorary pallbearers were Ronald Somers, Ward Good, Willard Hartzler, George Taylor, Roy Buschert and Corny Siemens.

Active pallbearers were Bernard Stauffer, Wayne Spicer, Levern Spicer, Lydon Earl, Ken Spicer and Darcy Spicer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 1, 1984 at 2:00p.m. from West Zion Mennonite Church, Carstairs with Reverend Gordon Buschert and Reverend C. J. Ramer officiating.

Interment followed in the West Zion Church cemetery. Mountain View Funeral Chapels entrusted with arrangements.
