Alice Christine Gray Allerding Biography (1908-2010)

Petoskey News-Review, Wednesday, April 21, 2010:

Alice ‘Christine’ (Gray) Allerding

After a 101-year journey, Alice “Christine” (Gray) Allerding is dancing in Heaven!

Christine passed away April 6, 2010, at Bay Bluffs care facility in Harbor Springs.

Christine was born on Sept. 16, 1908, an only child, to James “Burt” and Mabel (Allen) Gray in Mount Pleasant, Mich. While living on Broadway Avenue in Mount Pleasant and attending local elementary schools,

Christine was the darling of not only her parents, but grandmother, aunts and uncles. She completed Mount Pleasant High School in 1927 and attended Mount Pleasant Normal School and Western Michigan College.

On May 30, 1930, Christine married the “handsomest of the Allerding boys,” Richard Allerding. Dick preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1977.

After their marriage, Dick and Christine lived in Harbor Springs for five years and then moved to Dowagiac, Mich., and Christine worked for Michigan Bakeries. Christine worked in the sales promotion department as the “Sunshine Lady.”

She visited elementary schools giving out little loaves of bread to school children and promoting healthy eating habits.

Dick and Christine later moved to Muskegon, Mich., where she continued to work for Michigan Bakeries until the “Sunshine Lady” program was canceled.

During World War II, Christine worked as an agent for Prudential Life Insurance. After the war, the Allerdings moved back to Harbor Springs.

Christine was Dick’s partner in life and in business. They owned and operated Harbor Springs Grocery until 1976. While working at the store, Christine developed friendships with the summer cottage owners that have lasted throughout her life.

She continued to shop and deliver groceries for the resort community even after Dick’s death.

Christine always had an interest in life! She was inquisitive until her last day and always thinking of others. Her love of books and music were especially important to her after it was difficult for her to leave her home.

She was a member of the Bay View Reading Club and the Presbyterian Church. “Walker dancing” was an art form she perfected later in life! She was a joy to be with and will be greatly missed by many, many friends and her family.

In addition to her parents, and husband, Christine was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gladys (Ford) Bellanger, Claude and Ardis Allerding, Nelson and Bernice Allerding, Clara and Chuck Engler, Asa and Hilda Allerding, and nephew, Dale Allerding.

Christine is survived by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Ruth Allerding, and Carl and Virginia Allerding, and her nieces and nephews whom she treated as her children. Surviving her are, Marjorie Plough, Eleanor Frazier, Bob (Bev) Ford, Linda (Harvey) Kasuske, Janice (Gary) Shaw, Ellen Allerding, Carolyn (Egene) Peters, Nelda Allerding, Mary Lou Allerding, Allan (Patti) Allerding, Ann (Michael) Phillips, Bill (Lois) Engler, Nancy (Bill) Topham, Brian (Debbie) Allerding, Sarah (Jim) Matz, Sharon (Jim) Wright, Don (Barb) Allerding, Sandy (Alan) Kilmer, Rick (Debbie) Allerding, and numerous great- and great-greatnieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the many friends who loved Christine throughout her life and all those who were with her at the end of her journey.
