Carolyn Callister Bishop Biography (1934-2004)

Obituary

The Salt Lake Tribune, Wednesday, 16 Jun 2004:

Carolyn C . Bishop
1934 ~ 2004

After fighting a brave battle with ovarian cancer, Carolyn Callister Bishop peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on Monday afternoon June 14, 2004 at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Carolyn was born on July 7, 1934 in Fillmore, Utah, the second daughter of Alice Mears Callister and Leland Callister. The family later moved to Delta, Utah where Carolyn spent her formative years.

Carolyn married Joseph Layton Bishop on June 28, 1956 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Carolyn was blessed with a keen intellect, graduating at the top of her class at Delta High School where she was Valedictorian.

Carolyn received a Bachelor’s Degree with honors in Business Education from Brigham Young University in 1956. She later taught business classes at Imperial Valley College.

Carolyn was gifted musically. In high school, she sang with the Deltone Trio, winning the McNeil Breakfast Hour national music contest in Chicago.

The trio continued to entertain well after high school, winning the Small Group Musical Talent Award at Brigham Young University for four consecutive years. One of the great privileges of her life was singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Through the gift of music, she spent many years sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ at home and abroad, from Washington, D.C. to St. Petersburg, from Salt Lake City to Sydney.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; by her five sons and their wives (Greg and Michelle, Robert and Anne-Marie, Michael and Melinda, Steven and Rebecca, and Scott and Kendra); by six brothers (Tomas, Gary, Scott and Duane Callister, and Duane and Clinton Woolley) and three sisters, (Maurine Grizzle, Cathy Pace and Karen Shore); her mother, Alice Woolley and step-mother Nell Sorenson; and by 26 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her grandchildren and being the “grandma” of the neighborhood. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,

Carolyn and her husband served as Mission Presidents of the Argentina Buenos Aires North Mission from 1979 to 1982. They later presided over the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah and served for two years as the Area Welfare Agents of the Church for Central America.

A viewing will be held on Friday, June 18th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Butler Stake Center, 7035 S. Nutree Drive (3340 E.), Salt Lake City, Utah. The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 19th, 2004 at 10:00 a.m.

A viewing will also be held before the funeral at the Butler Stake Center, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Delta, Utah.

The family would like to thank her doctors, nurses and the dedicated people of Life Path, Hospice and Family Care for their personal dedication to Carolyn’s comfort.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in the name of Carolyn C. Bishop to The Hereditary Disease Foundation, 1303 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90405; www.hdfoundation.org . Directors, Independent Funeral Service.
