Obituary

Petoskey News-Review, Sunday, June 23, 2002:

Jeffrey P. Bodzick, 46

Jeffrey P. Bodzick, 46, of Petoskey, passed away Friday, June 21, 2002, at Northern Michigan Hospital.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, at Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Harbor Springs. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at the church.

Jeff was born May 21, 1956, in Petoskey, the son of Joseph and Alice (Hartung) Bodzick. He attended Harbor Springs Schools and was a graduate of Harbor Springs High School class of 1974. He attended Eastern and Ferris State University. Sports played a large role in his life and as a student athlete Jeff excelled. His sports achievements would include second leading scorer in the history of Harbor Springs High School basketball with 1,458 points. He achieved All State status two times in football, basketball and baseball. In 1974, as captain he was named MVP of the state runners-up Class D basketball. He was also selected MVP for football and baseball.

On Dec. 31, 1983, he married Karen Smith in Petoskey at the First Presbyterian Church.

In 1976, Jeff joined the Emmet County Sheriff's Department, beginning his career as a marine deputy and eventually in 1991 after years of service he was appointed sheriff.

Jeff's service to our community as a law enforcement officer was significant, but the family would also like to remember the man. Jeff was a devoted and loving husband and father. His children, Jennifer and Jeffrey Jr., were very precious to him. Jeff was truly a gentle giant. This quality was most evident in his care for Jeffrey Jr., who is a special needs child. His loving and caring nature will be missed by all.

Jeff was a member of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the National Sheriff's Association, Michigan Sheriff's Association and the Emmet County Deputy's Association.

When he had free time, he enjoyed spending time tending his yard, golfing and watching sports.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Karen, and by his children, Jennifer and Jeffrey Jr., and grandson, Connor. Also surviving are his parents, Joseph and Alice Bodzick; and his brothers and sisters, Sue (Jim) Richards, Marge (Bill) Owen and Ted (Kathy) Bodzick; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be directed to the Jeffrey Bodzick Jr. Fund at Bank One.

Arrangements were handled by Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey.
