HOLDEN, UTAH- Jess Charles Bennett, 82, passed away January 13, 2003 at his home. Jess was the son of the late John Charles Bennett and Susan Ashby Bennett. He was born September 18, 1920 in Holden.

Jess learned the principle of hard work by hauling timber and working with his father in the saw mill in Maple Hallow. Mr. Bennett served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North Central States Mission. Jess later met his future wife Estell Robison. On January 31, 1945 they were married in the Salt Lake Temple. He served honorably in the Navy during the World War II conflict. Jess devoted his time to the community by working for a number of years as the Mayor of Holden and also as Fire Chief for the Holden Volunteer Fire Department. He served in the church in several different positions. He worked as a member of the High Council for a number of years and also as a member of two Bishoprics . Along with his wife Estell, he had the opportunity to serve a second mission in the New York, New York City Mission where he was called to be Branch President. He continued to show his love for missionary work by serving faithfully as a Stake Mission President. He and his wife worked together as temple workers in the Manti Temple.

Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Estell Robison Bennett; daughter, Sue Esplin (Karl) of Cedar City; sons, Melvin Jess Bennett (Jerris) and Brent John Bennett (Debbie), both of Holden, UT; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Charles and Susan Ashby Bennett; sisters, Barta Melville, LaPreal Swallow, Lena Bennett and a brother, Ned A. Bennett.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 18, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Holden LDS Chapel, Holden, UT. Interment will be in the Holden Cemetery with military rights conducted by the American Legion Post 61of Fillmore, Utah. The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Holden LDS Church and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., prior to the service. Olpin Southern Utah Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
