Margaret Robison Swensen

Longtime Anchorage resident, Margaret Robison Swensen, 65, died at home on February 6, 2002, following a lengthy illness.

Visitation will be from 10:30- 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Brayton Drive, followed by services at noon. Stake President Brent Wadsworth will presided over the services, which will be conducted by Alan Swensen. A memorial service will also be held in the Bennion Third Ward Chapel, 570 South 2700 West, Salt Lake City, Utah at noon on Friday, February 15. Burial will be in Memorial Estates in Salt Lake City.

Mrs. Swensen was born March 12, 1936 in Murray, Utah. On February 3, 1955 she married her high school sweetheart, Evan Easten Swensen, in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to Anchorage in 1957. Margaret was a full-time wife, mother, and homemaker.

Mrs. Swensen was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, patterning her life after the teachings of the Savior.

She served in numerous positions in the church, including those of Primary and Relief Society president. At the time of her death she was an ordinance worker in the Anchorage Alaska Temple.

Margaret loved writing, sewing -- especially quilting -- and genealogy research. She compiled and published her grandfather's poems, As Life Passes, and along with her husband, wrote two books: Hiking Guide to Alaska and Fishing Guide to Alaska. Her love for quilting and people was manifested in the 80 quilts she made in recent years for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other members of her extended family, and friends.

Margaret's children, united in the description of their mother, said: "Our mother was kind, loving, generous, and compassionate. She never turned anyone away, stranger or friend. Mom encouraged a house full of people. There was always room for our friends and plenty of food to share. Her door was always open, and she always offered a shoulder to cry on or wisdom and care to those around her. Mother loved her children unconditionally, making them want to be "better people."

Mrs. Swensen is survived by her husband, Evan Easten Swensen of Anchorage; her sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Dawn Swensen, Lars and Rebecca Swensen, and son Easten Swensen of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law Jesse and Diana Swensen of Garner, North Carolina; son and daughter-in-law Blake and Emily Swensen of Portland, Oregon; daughters and sons-in-law Carrie and Rex Smith and Kathryn and Mike Bevis of Anchorage; her daughter and son-in-law Diane and Ed Clawson of Palmer; and her daughter Betty Swensen of Edwardsville, Kansas. Mrs. Swensen is survived by 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Darlene Rynearson, Eva Hansen, Carl Robison, Frank Jr. Robison of Utah, and Luella Eggleston of Big Lake, Alaska. Her father, Franklin Reeve Robison, and her mother, Fern Blake Robison, preceded her in death.
